The EU Safe Hearts Plan
In 2025 the European Commission set out the EU Safe Hearts Plan: a Europe-wide framework to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. The Plan rests on three pillars and three cross-cutting themes. Preventa Health is the operational delivery layer for workplace screening under Pillar 2.
Why it matters
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Europe — 1.7 million lives lost each year, 62 million people living with disease, and an estimated €282 billion in annual economic burden. The Plan calls on Member States, employers, and providers to act earlier, closer to where people live and work.
Three pillars
Pillar 1 — Prevention
Tobacco, nutrition, physical activity, air quality, and other population-level drivers.
Pillar 2 — Early detection & screening
Identifying cardiovascular and cardiometabolic risk earlier — including in the workplace — so people can act before symptoms appear.
Pillar 3 — Treatment
Equitable access to evidence-based clinical pathways and follow-up care.
Three cross-cutting themes
- Equity & access — reaching people where they live and work
- Digital & data — interoperable, GDPR-compliant data flows
- Research & innovation — closing the gap between guidelines and practice
Where Preventa delivers
Preventa Health's workplace programme operationalises Pillar 2 ambitions through validated point-of-care testing, structured psychosocial screening, and a physician-verified GP follow-up pathway.
| Plan ambition | Preventa delivery |
|---|---|
| Earlier identification of cardiovascular risk | On-site lipid panel + HbA1c + CRP + ACR (kidney) + blood pressure averaging |
| Closer to where people live and work | Test days delivered on the employer's site, 10 minutes per employee |
| Address psychosocial determinants | P-PRI psychosocial risk index — 66 validated items across 6 domains |
| Equitable, structured follow-up | Physician-verified report routed to the employee's own GP when criteria are met |
| Interoperable, GDPR-compliant data | EU data residency, anonymised employer dashboards, individual data owned by the employee |
How we describe the relationship
Preventa Health is not a co-author of the Plan and does not represent the European Commission. We describe our work as aligned with the Plan's Pillar 2 ambitions. The EU sets the policy direction; Preventa runs the screening on the ground.
